Texas proudly relates its history as having been under six flags: France, Spain, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States. However, Zapata County and the surrounding area can add a seventh flag to our history, that of the Republic of the Rio Grande.

The County posses important natural and historical resources including Falcon Reservoir, The Rio Grande River, San Ygnacio, and an oil and natural gas industry that supplies jobs and a steady revenue stream to the County. The challenge that lies ahead in these changing times with higher energy prices is to utilize these resource in a way that will provide a sound future for current and future generations.
