Historic Zapata, Sight Seeing Zapata County represents a unique blending of the old and the new. Just 15 miles north of Zapata, the town of San Ygnacio is one of the most historical villages along the Rio Grande. Complementing the historic ambiance of downtown, the neighborhoods contain over 10 historic homes and a beautiful plaza which offers a delightful viewing area.
Exhibits include relics and historic artifacts, nature topics, and history of the community that dates back to 1748.
La Paz Museum Located in historic San Ygnacio, 15 miles north of Zapata, in one of the most historic villages along the Rio Grande , the La Paz Museum is housed in a near century old, hand cut limestone building located on the grounds of the Arturo Benavides Elementary School . The museum contains a certified Texas Heritage Resource Center . It is a regional source for teaching Texas history. The museum is open Monday Friday, from 7:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M., during the school year, and by special request.
Parks
Falcon State Park Located on the Eastern shore of Falcon Reservoir in both Zapata & Starr Counties, it covers 572 acres of gently rolling hills covered by thickets of mesquite, huisache, ebony, wild olive, cactus & native grasses.
Fishing on Falcon Lake Zapata has excellent year-round fishing! You can fish for Black Bass, White Bass, Striped Bass, Crappie and Catfish. Top trophy months are late December, January and early February. The lightest winds and best all-around bass fishing is from late September through November and again in March & April. Hunting Zapata County is a world class hunting destination and is home to one of the best wildlife resources in Texas as touted in numerous articles in national magazines such as Field and Stream and Outdoor life.
